Shanduka-Aggreko Completes Successful Power Project for
the 2010 FIFA World CupTM
27 July 2010: Johannesburg, South Africa-
Aggreko plc, along with its joint venture partner Shanduka Group, has begun
decommissioning the temporary power
plants used to successfully power the 2010 FIFA World
CupTM. In total, 56 MW of power was provided throughout
the tournament to the ten host stadiums and to the International
Broadcast Centre.
The power was provided under two separate contracts. The first
was a 29 MW broadcast power contract under which Shanduka-Aggreko
provided temporary power packages for the
television and radio broadcast of the tournament. Under the second
contract, Shanduka-Aggreko provided 27 MW of ‘domestic’ power to
the stadiums. The domestic power supply included the
accreditation and ticket centres, security checkpoints and the
hospitality, food and beverage and merchandising facilities.
The temporary power supply at all venues
operated successfully for the duration of the tournament. The
decommissioning of the equipment, including all generators, fuel tanks,
distribution panels and cables, is
expected to be completed by the middle of August.
Temporary power supply statistics:
- 56 MW of power is enough to supply over 56,000 homes
- 253 generators were utilised for the project
- 525 kilometres of cable was installed
- 360 staff were employed on the project, 320 of whom were
locally-employed South Africans.
